Riot police arrested 111 students in Kathmandu during violent protests last Wednesday, home ministry spokesman Gopendra Bahadur Pandey said.
“In Kathmandu, 35 students were arrested while trying to hold a violent procession carrying sticks,” Pandey said, adding that dozens of others were arrested outside the city.
The students smashed the windshield of a police van in the capital while two other vehicles were badly damaged in Biratnagar.
A Nepal Student Union (NSU) source claimed over 200 students were arrested across the country during demonstrations, with over 60 injured during clashes with police.
Several prominent politicians were also injured, including Nepali Congress (NC) party leader Sujata Koirala and a senior leader of the Nepal Communist Party-United Marxist and Leninist (NCP-UML), Subash Nemwang.
“Had the young students not protected me, I would have been killed by the riot police.
“The riot police used force which injured several protesters, including the students,” Sujata said.
